Beckers Muscular Dystrophy After Stem Cell Therapy in Mumbai India
He is a 12 year old and a known case of BMD with history of gradual onset of progressive lower extremities muscle weakness since age of 7 years with complaints of difficulty in climbing stairs, getting up from floor. Weakness even progressed to upper extremities with difficulty in overhead activities and frequent falls. No family history. On examination, he has grade 3 #713; muscle power in proximal muscles of both upper extremities and lower extremities and 4 in distal muscles of both upper extremities and lower extremities. He has bilateral pseudohypertrophy of calf muscles and walks on toes. Neurologically, he is hypotonic and hyporeflexic. Functionally, he is independent in most of the ADL, needs assistance in lower body dressing. On FIM he score 109. After Stem Cell Treatment 1. Reports overall feeling of freshness and energetic. 2. Can manage to walk on heels. Earlier he would walk on toes. 3. Posture has improved. Earlier he would walk with lordosis. 4. Beckers Muscular Dystrophy Improvement After Stem Cell Therapy in Mumbai India
He is a known case of BMD since 10 years (2003). The difficulty initially started as difficulty in walking and stair climbing. Slowly weakness progressed and he could not get up from the floor. He went to the local doctor, who advised him to get investigations done. Investigations in 2005 showed Becker #39;s specific gene deletion, however diagnosis was confirmed as BMD based on clinical symptoms, increased CPK values and EMG changes that were consistent with BMD. On examination, he is hypotonic and hyporeflexic. There is hypertrophy of calf muscles and wasting of quadriceps and trunk muscles. There is slight tongue hypertrophy and slight difficulty in speech. He has complete passive range of motion. His upper extremities strength is above functional grade and he does the overhead activities. Out of all the antigravity muscles of lower limbs only plantar flexors are above functional level. Hip flexors are functional level and all the other lower extremities muscles are below functional level. Abdominals have functional level strength. Bilateral extremities are profoundly weak. Functionally he is independent in all ADL, however has great difficulty in getting up from lower surfaces. He needs support to climb staircase. On FIM he scores 104. After Stem Cell Treatment 1. (HealthDay News) -- Injecting a therapeutic molecule into muscle appears to jump-start the production of a crucial protein that's missing in patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, British researchers report.

The treatment so far is only applicable to about 13 percent of people with the debilitating and ultimately fatal disease, but scientists are hopeful that similar molecules might expand the treatment to a wider range of patients.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy affects about one in 3,500 males, and involves a progressive wasting of muscle due to a genetic inability to produce the protein dystrophin, a key component of muscle structure. No treatments are available for the illness, and most of those affected die by age 30.

Recently, molecules called antisense oligonucleotides have shown some promise. These molecules work by "skipping over" portions of the defective gene that would otherwise block dystrophin production. Read more...
